To understand the world you have to understand yourself. So far what I got to understand about
human nature is that our personalities are built up of multiple layers. Ideas,
intentions, motivations from all directions circulate in our heads before we
arrive at a decision nevertheless the society we live in has a great impact on
us.
Out of the many
possible parcelling of the human psyche I focus my attention on exploring two
main parts of our personalities: the person we let to be seen by the world and
the person that is living behind our visible self. The inner and outer: revealed
and unrevealed, acts and thoughts, reason and emotion, conscious and
unconscious.
The inner and the outer figures are two
aspects of the same character.
The outer silhouette stands for a system of values, norms and interdictions we grow up with. This part of us is more concerned about social appearance, future, positions and rolls: the long term plans. The inner part of us is our instinctive side, which is reacting without thinking and without caring for anybody’s judgement. The inner self is untouchable by social expectations representing a part of us that holds all repressed primary impulses and unconscious emotions. These two sides go hand in hand, none of them is less important but one constantly tries to lead the other. Every now and then reason directs emotion or emotion directs reason. This on going rivalry shapes our characteristics and the path we take. Agreements and disagreements of our two sides lead to dramatic misunderstandings, hurt hearts and a lot of comic situations that are very human, entertaining and easy to relate to.
